Water - Steven's efforts

I have a couple other ideas but just in case I don't get around to it here are a couple of water shots to keep you all going:

Lighthouse on the Rocks
f4.5 1/2000 ISO200

Washdown Area
(f8, HDR, ISO 200)

I know these two are fairly spurious links to water but what can I say, if it was straight forward it wouldn't be nearly as......as........shutterbug now would it.

The first is the lighthouse at Kiama and has water in the bottom corner.  The second is the showers on site at Sydney Airport in the "Aircraft Dump Bay" which is the lovely area where the airplane toilets are discharged into.  Imagine a GIANT public toilet and proportionally smelly.  This is one place you DON'T want to have a reason to use the emergency shower!!

  1. Hurrah, post from down under ! and what belter it is !
I'm going to have to come in strong on this one to keep up with submissions so far.

    - Lighthouse on the Rocks
Nice one, got to be giving Carol a run for her money with this one.

The actual light house is a bit of a bulls eye but I guess that’s done to allow the pool to "curve" around. Would be interested in maybe a portrait shot LHS high rocks, balanced on RHS with the light house.
Could you not have stopped down a bit on the aperture a bit to get more DOF? Close up it's a bit soft front and back.
Also smells of HDR or some heavy PP / RAW conversion tweaks (guess at least a Contrast and Sat boost, strong sharpen as well as a vignette).
p.s. The clouds make me very jealous !

    Wash down Area
Sorry not a "photo" :-)but will admit a very nice image.
As strong as your recent cargo containers but more of a subject in this one.
Person here would look stunning, I can really see a grubby worker washing hands, or better yet a sexy young lady bursting out of a dirty boiler suit !
The dirty / grain from HDR matches the "griminess" of the actual space.

Perhaps a turned a bit more to the LHS to get more of the pipe etc would be nice but then you might have bulls-eyed the bins.
One to make David Nightingale proud of you.

  2. I think the lighthouse pic looks oversaturated with colour, and personally I'd prefer a more natural look. I thought it was HDR at first. The whole photo just looks too 'spiky' for my taste, and there's no accounting for taste.

The washdown area appeals to me a lot. I wouldn't frame it and put it on the wall, but there's a lot of interesting colouring and texture going on. Clearly it's HDR, but I don't mean that in a negative way (and I'm not a great fan of High Dynamic Range). Personally I'd crop the gubbins on the right-hand side to get it out of shot, but that's about all.

  3. p.s. Have you thought of selling some of these HDR ones. I'm sure there is a market to the tourists for some bridge and opera house ones of this caliber ?

    Cheers,

The light house picture is in fact HDR, although only slightly. By this I mean I took a single RAW image and in the RAW processor processed it for -1EV, 0 and +1EV to give me the HDR material without having taken a HDR set. (Richard) this is why there is no more detail revealed/created than there would be for a single exposure. Had IT planned to do this in advance I would have increased the DOF to compensate a little but in truth I was just playing with the technique to see what it did and liked the results. Basically it allowed me to play with the tone mapping part of the HDR which as perhaps prduced a shot that is perhaps a tad over saturated but I like that HDR look. To be honest on the larger resolution (16bit) image it doesn't look as 'spiky' to use Paul's rather good phrase but as I say, I quite like that look.

As for the shower, most definitely and unreservedly HDR but I quite like playing from time to time. Not something I'd ever hang in the wall but a nice image none the less (even if I say so myself).

As for selling, not really interested in selling because then a hobby becomes less of a hobby and I fear I would then find myself shooting what I thought would sell rather than just experimenting and playing which is what I enjoy. Also, its not at all British for one to be saying "I say old chap, you know what, I reckon my photo's are pretty darn good...you should buy them". Nah, not my bag baby.
